Students at Oxford enjoy studying at an internationally renowned university with a centuries-old reputation for innovation and outstanding academic achievement. The senior member of each college is an officer known generically as the Head of House. Their specific title varies from college to college as indicated in the list below. While the Head of House will usually be an academic, it is not uncommon for a person to be appointed who has had a distinguished career outside academic circles. There are a few exceptions however, with the most expensive programs, including business administration, costing up to £77,390 (US$108,307). A new graduate college of the University, Reuben College, was established in 2019 and plans to enrol its first students in 2021, using the premises of the Radcliffe Science Library. For graduate students, many colleges express a preference for candidates who plan to undertake research in an area of interest of one of its fellows. St Hugh’s College, for example, states that it accepts graduate students in most subjects, principally those in the fields of interest of the fellows of the college. Some colleges offer their own scholarships, and there are a number of external scholarships available, where organizations offer anything from £1,000 (US$1,400) to the entire cost of tuition.

Many other colleges hold smaller events during the year that they call summer balls or parties. These are usually held on an annual or irregular basis, and are usually black tie. The Oxford University Press is the world’s second oldest and currently the largest university press by the number of publications.

Oxford has a reputation for world-leading research, teaching and resources, all within the confines of a uniquely beautiful city. Graduate programs at Oxford are shorter than in many countries, typically lasting only one year for a master’s degree, something which is designed to facilitate swift career progression. Unlike the University of Cambridge, Oxford does not operate a pooling system for candidates invited to interview. Instead, it’s common for applicants to be asked to stay multiple days in the city and, if there are no places available at their first-choice college, they may also be invited for interviews at other colleges which have less competition for places. It has a friendly rivalry with Cambridge for the title of best university in the UK and is regularly ranked as being one of the top three universities in the world. Students normally have most of their tutorials in their own college, but often have a couple of modules taught at other colleges or even at faculties and departments. Most colleges take both graduates and undergraduates, but several are for graduates only. The university is made up of thirty-nine semi-autonomous constituent colleges, five permanent private halls, and a range of academic departments which are organised into four divisions. Beginning in the 13th century, the university gained charters from the crown, but the religious foundations in Oxford town were suppressed during the Protestant Reformation. All of these colleges later became coeducational, starting with Lady Margaret Hall and St Anne’s in 1979, and finishing with St Hilda’s, which began to accept male students in 2008. In the early 20th century, Oxford and Cambridge were widely perceived to be bastions of male privilege, however the integration of women into Oxford moved forward during the First World War. In 1916 women were admitted as medical students on a par with men, and in 1917 the university accepted financial responsibility for women’s examinations. Located in and around Oxford’s medieval city centre, the university comprises 44 colleges and halls, and over 100 libraries, making it the largest library system in the UK. Each college and permanent private hall has its own arms, although in some cases these were assumed rather than granted by the College of Arms.

Most of Oxford’s graduate colleges were founded as coeducational establishments in the 20th century, with the exception of St Antony’s, which was founded as a men’s college in 1950 and began to accept women only in 1962. By 1988, 40% of undergraduates at Oxford were female; in 2016, 45% of the student population, and 47% of undergraduate students, were female. The Universities Tests Act 1871 opened all university degrees and positions to men who were not members of the Church of England , which made it possible for Catholics and Non-conformists to open private halls. The first Catholic private halls were Clarke’s Hall , opened by the Jesuit Order in 1896 and Hunter Blair’s Hall (later St Benet’s Hall) opened by the Benedictine Order in 1899. In 1918 the university passed a statute to allow private halls which were not run for profit to become permanent private halls and the two halls took their current names. Of the dozens established during the 12th–15th centuries, none survived the Reformation.

There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation. It grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are jointly referred to as Oxbridge. For the intensity, breadth, quality and impact of its research, Oxford has few peers in the world. Research activity extends from the study of the formation of the Universe and the development of early civilisations, to making governments work better around the world, to high performance computing and the latest breakthroughs in medical science.

It is known that teaching at Oxford existed in some form as early as 1096, but it is unclear when the university came into being.
